The criminal case based on the Kumtor mining project has been dropped against the former Kyrgyz President Mr. Askar Akayev. This was told to the reporters on Friday by the head of the Department of International Legal Cooperation under the Prosecutor General’s Office, Mr. Asylbek Akmatov.
He further said, “The criminal prosecution against Askar Akayev was terminated due to the expiration of the statute of limitations for bringing a person to criminal responsibility,”
The ex-president of Kyrgyzstan along with three other officials were accused of abuse of power and official position plus negligence in the formation of general agreement with Kameco in 1992 and restructuring the Kumtor project in 2003.
Akayev fled the country in 2005 after the change of power in Kyrgyzstan.
According to the State Committee for National Security, Akayev fully admitted his guilt in committing the crime and actively cooperated with the investigators.
